No. Cloud cover or rain does not impact the performance of the Spot device.

Typically you can expect the batteries in your Spot device to last between 5 and 12 days depending upon how the device is used during a trip. Maximum battery life can be achieved by following these best practices:

a) Ensure the device is switched off when no longer required each day. For example most treks our guided trips will only actually be in progress for between 4-6 hours each day. Once you have reached the final destination at the end of each day then the device should be switched off. If this is not done the device will continue to run for 24 hours before switching itself off – thereby consuming additional battery power;

b) Ensure that the device when in use is positioned in such as way as to maximise the visibility of the device to the sky. By doing this you will maximise the chances of the device successfully sending location data to the communication satellites with minimal retries. Once the location data has successfully been sent to the satellite then the device will not attempt to connect to the satellite until the next scheduled cycle – thereby minimising battery useage;

c) Ensure the correct batteries are used in the device – High powered Lithium batteries are the only kind of batteries recommended by the manufacturer of the device.
